February Forward with Calm: How Horses Support Well-Being in 2026

The turn of the New Year often brings a surge of “new year, new you” energy, filled with ambitious resolutions and fast-paced goals. However, for those who have spent their careers on the front lines—our veterans and first responders—this collective push for “more” can sometimes feel like just more noise. After years of living in a state of high alert, the most powerful resolution for 2026 isn’t necessarily to do more, but to find a way to be more present, grounded, and calm.

At the heart of the Illawarra, equine-assisted mental health practitioner Kelly Zorn offers a unique path toward this stillness. Drawing on 22 years of service in the NSW Police Force, Kelly intimately understands the weight of the uniform and the challenges of transitioning from a service role into civilian life.

The Wisdom of the Herd: Why Horses?

Horses are masters of the present moment. As prey animals, they have evolved to be hyper-aware of their environment, mirroring the very hypervigilance that many service members carry as a result of their duties. In an equine-assisted session, a horse like Rooster—a 17.2-hand “monster truck” known for his friendly nature—doesn’t care about your rank or your past; he responds only to who you are in the exact moment you stand before him.

This immediate, non-verbal feedback creates a powerful “mirror” effect. If you approach with a racing heart and a cluttered mind, the horse may respond with caution. As you learn to regulate your own nervous system—softening your breath and grounding your feet—the horse reflects that change back to you by relaxing its own body. This isn’t just about “fixing” a problem; it’s about rebuilding a sense of safety within your own skin.

Building Resilience for the Year Ahead

In 2026, rather than setting rigid milestones, mindful horsemanship encourages gentle goals:
  • Gaining Somatic Awareness: Learning to notice where stress lives in your body before it becomes overwhelming.

  • Regulating the Nervous System: Using the rhythmic nature of tasks like grooming or leading to find a “reset” button for the fight-or-flight response.

  • Rebuilding Trust: Establishing a partnership with a 500kg animal like Buzz or Jimee to practice clear, calm communication without the need for words.

Transitioning with Purpose

Transitioning from a high-stakes career is a journey, not a single event. The Equine Assisted Therapy Australia (EATA) model I use in my sessions focuses on experiential learning—finding solutions by doing. Whether you are navigating the “hidden weight” of past experiences or simply looking for a safe space to reconnect with yourself, these sessions offer a judgment-free zone.

By stepping into the paddock, you aren’t just leaving the stressors of the world behind for an hour; you are gaining tools to take back into your daily life. Along by Kelly’s side you can learn that authentic leadership and personal strength stem from empathy and connection rather than force.

Start Your Journey

If the start of 2026 feels overwhelming, remember that you don’t have to navigate it alone. Whether you’re a beginner curious about the healing power of horses or an experienced rider looking to deepen your connection through classical dressage, there is a space for you here.

Equine Assisted Mental Health Therapy sessions are client-centered, trauma-informed, and may be eligible for NDIS funding.
